  Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)

If you need transportation help for medical appointments or services, NEMT can be right for you. NEMT provides door-to-door service, meaning they can help with getting in and out of the home, vehicle, and medical office. If needed, medical supervision can be provided during the trip. To arrange NEMT services, a Provider Certification Statement from a health care professional is required prior to arranging transportation and a treatment authorization request (TAR) may be required. Types of NEMT may include non-emergency ambulance, gurney van, wheelchair van, or medical air transport. Please call at least 5 days before your appointment to request NEMT services.

  Non-Medical Transportation (NMT)

Non-medical transportation can be arranged for you if you do not require additional assistance from the driver. NMT services are available when you attest that you have no other way to get to your Medi-Cal covered services.

You may be able to get NMT services for the following reasons:

      • No valid driver's license
      • No working vehicle in the household
      • Unable to travel or wait for medical or dental services alone
      • A physical, cognitive, mental or developmental limitation

Types of NMT may be passenger car, taxi, bus, train, or other public transportation. It is based on the least costly mode of transport that meets your needs. Coverage includes transportation costs for the member and one attendant such as a parent, guardian, or spouse. Please call at least 5 days before your appointment for NMT services.

  Gas Mileage Reimbursement

A friend or family member may be eligible to receive gas mileage reimbursement for using a personal vehicle to transport you to your Medi-Cal covered services. Before your driver is able to be paid, they will need to submit their valid driving credentials to us. This includes:

      • Valid driver’s license
      • Valid vehicle registration; and
      • Valid vehicle insurance

Upon completion of your appointment, you will be required to submit an attendance verification document. You can find a list of required documents here. You cannot be reimbursed for driving yourself. Please call at least 5 days before your appointment for gas mileage reimbursement.

Travel-Related Expenses

You may qualify for travel-related transportation expenses to your medically necessary Medi-Cal covered services. This may include lodging, meals, parking, tolls, or other travel expenses. Travel expenses may also be covered for an attendant. Prior approval is required and these services are subject to time and distance requirements.  Please contact us to learn more about this benefit. Services can be requested by calling Partnership’s Transportation Services.
