Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

High blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries are what carry your blood from your heart to the rest of your body.

    • High blood pressure (hypertension) is when your monitor reads at or above 130/80 mm Hg.
    • High blood pressure usually has no symptoms but can cause problems for your heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.
    • Some people may be able to control their blood pressure by making healthy lifestyle choices or taking blood pressure medicines.

Key tips for preventing high blood pressure:

    • Move your body each week (about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)
    • Do not smoke
    • Eat a healthy diet, including limiting sodium (salt) and alcohol
    • Keep a healthy weight
    • Manage stress

It is important to get your blood pressure checked regularly. The good news is that you can take steps to prevent high blood pressure, or to treat it if it is already high.
