2012, Partnership HealthPlan of California (PHC) began the Offering and
Honoring Choices™ initiative to ensure that its members and their families are
knowledgeable about health care treatment options, empowered to define their
treatment goals, and able to make informed choices about the interventions they
choose during the last years of life.
In the previous article, I talked about why pain pills are not a good treatment for chronic pain. Over time they lose their effectiveness and can even cause more pain. In this article, I want to discuss some other dangers from prescription pain pills, also called opioids.
Doctors in California, and nationwide, are trying to be more careful about prescribing pain pills. It is not because we are being mean. It is not because we want our patients to suffer more pain. It is happening because we are becoming more aware of the serious problems pain pills can cause. Let me explain.
