CHCF Opioid Safety Coalitions Network Northern California Fall Convening

The California Health Care Foundation and the California Department of Public Health hosted California's 2016 Fall Convening on Opioid Safety. The agenda included Andrew Kolodny, MD, Co-founder of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing; Corey Waller, MD, with the Camden Coalition;  and local coalition leaders presenting innovative approaches to curbing the opioid epidemic.

Strategies in Managing Opioid and Benzodiazepine Co-Prescribing

The Managing Pain Safely (MPS) initiative hosted a webinar to discuss the key topics related to co-prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines. The webinar topics included: risks of co-prescribing; tapering (how long and what to taper first); who to taper and who not to taper; and talking to patients about the risks of using both medications.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

June 21, 2016
PHC hosted a webinar detailing the “Who, What, Why, and Where of Medication Assisted Treatment”.  Dr. Tom Bertolli​ detailed how to set up a buprenorphine program at a health center, highlighting how to pick the appropriate candidate for buprenorphine, how to educate patients on buprenorphine and medication assisted treatment (MAT), how to implement a team-based approach to MAT, and how to monitor patients once started on buprenorphine.​

MPS County Level Data Sharing Webinars

February 2​016
These webinars highlighted our county level Managing Pain Safely data, including aggregate county level data on specific measures and an example of blinded provider level data for the specific counties in the selected focus area.  

This was an opportunity for our providers to view the data that we collected, learn the process for requesting PHC data, and to ask any questions related to the PHC data.

Managing Pain Forum II

January 15, 2016
PHC sponsored the Managing Pain Safely Forum II to provide participants (medical providers/prescribers, medical office staff, pharmacists, community stakeholders) with an opportunity to learn from a diverse set of presenters on how to balance the use of opioids for healing, while avoiding harm. This Forum highlighted the neurobiology behind substance use disorder; suggested ways to change the approach of working the chronic pain/substance use disorder patients; and provided an opportunity for interactive breakout sessions with presenters.

Headaches, Making the Right Diagnosis and Providing the Best Treatment

This 1-Hour webinar sponsored by Partnership HealthPlan of California covered diagnosing the three most common headache types, the appropriate work up for each headache type, appropriate acute care, and appropriate prevention strategies. This webinar discussed the negative impact narcotics have on headache management and the practice of tapering narcotics as the initial stage of treatment for chronic headaches.

Setting Up Pain Management Oversight Committees Webinar

Starting April 1, PHC implemented a new policy that required case review of high-dose chronic opioid users. This learning was from two provider sites’ experience of implementing a pain management oversight committee to review the patients’ treatment plans.
